Providing Strategic Oversight and Expert Guidance

The long-term success and ethical governance of Empower Queer are championed by our Board of Directors and specialized Advisory Councils. These roles are for established leaders and highly experienced professionals who can commit their expertise to strategic planning, financial oversight, fundraising, and mission alignment. Serving in a governance or advisory capacity is a high-impact, non-compensated opportunity to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of our mission at the highest level. We are actively seeking individuals who bring diverse lived experiences and senior-level expertise in areas where the LGBTQIA+ community is often underrepresented, particularly finance, legal compliance, technology ethics, and large-scale non-profit management.

The Board of Directors provides fiduciary and legal oversight, meeting quarterly to review organizational performance, approve the annual budget, and set the strategic direction for the next 3-5 years. Board members typically serve a three-year term and are expected to actively participate in one standing committee (e.g., Audit, Governance, or Development). Crucially, all Board members are expected to be active philanthropic ambassadors, leveraging their networks to secure foundational funding and major gifts for the organization. Prospective candidates must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to radical inclusion and possess a proven track record of ethical leadership.

In addition to the Board, we maintain several specialized Advisory Councils that provide focused expertise on specific program areas. The Policy and Advocacy Council advises on legislative strategy and public messaging, meeting monthly via video conference. The Technology and Innovation Council guides our digital infrastructure development, ensuring our resources remain secure and accessible to all users across various platforms. Advisory Council members are selected based on their deep domain knowledge and serve a two-year renewable term, contributing approximately 3-5 hours per month. Applications for both the Board and Advisory Councils are accepted on a rolling basis, but formal recruitment drives are conducted annually in the fall to fill open seats. These roles are essential to maintaining the integrity, responsiveness, and forward-thinking trajectory of Empower Queer.
